I’ve Heard It All Before The State Of US Men’s ……Insert Sport Here

I’ve heard it all before the state of US men’s tennis , US men’s soccer, US men’s track & field . Well the question I’ve got to to ask why we ought to be believe that the US men are meant to be the dominant force in the world when it comes to the such athletic endeavors as track & field, soccer , much less tennis ? I mean since the retirement of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras . The US hasn’t produced a player of reverence much less on par with the dominance of the duo of Agassi and Sampras, who reigned supreme on the tennis courts.

Bolt sprints his way into the history books. Having just won the men's 100m Olympic final. In doing so the young Jamaican also broke the world and Olympic record for the event. The record set now stands 9.69 seconds for the event. And now the assertion is being made that Tyson Gay the reigning 100m and 200m world champion is back on track to usurp the dominance of reigning world record holder and Olympic champion in the 100m and 200m in Usain Bolt . And when considers the dominance of Bolt at the Beijing Olympics. It’s easy to understand why Gay may well feel disatisfied at his present status as the guy everyone seems to have forgotten . It’s now Usain Bolt’s world and everyone else is merely a spectator watching .

And whilst the mantel of being the world’s fastest man doesn’t seem to have the resonance it once had. It has to be said once the quadrennial event of the Olympics comes around. All eyes bear down on the men’s 100m finals. In Beijing it was allegedly about swimmer Michael Phelps and his path to Olympic sporting immortality. Whilst one can’t detract from his feat of winning 8 Olympic gold medals . His feat while astonishing pales into comparison as to the immediate explosiveness as to Bolt’s astonishing feats in the men’s 100m and 200m finals , as well as the 4×100m men’s sprint relay finals.

That triumvirate of events will stand the test of time in the annals of Olympic history. And thought records are there to be broken. It may well take another astonishing feat of human endeavor for those records to be broken with the ease that Bolt shattered both of the sprint events. And then joining his teammates to completely obliterate the men’s 4×100m men’s relay world record. The record itself was held by the US team. And thought not frequently in danger of being broken. What took place in Beijing last summer took away the breaths of many in astonishment.

With the IAAF’s (International Assoc. Athletics Federation) World Championships about to take place in Berlin, Germany from the 15th -23rd August 2009 . It can be be said that the expectations are high . The meeting of the duo is widely anticipated. Given the fact that Gay’s Olympic appearance proved to be a tremendous disappointment for his fans and the patriots back at home in the US. The weight of the country may no longer be upon Gay’s shoulders at this point. But his reputation has been given a severe dent. And until he redeems himself in the eyes of his peers and fans. He’ll have to walk in the giant shadow that has been cast by Usain Bolt over the sport.

As for Bolt , himself, he’s started off his season rather impressively. And at the same time it’d appear that Tysom Gay is prepared to match him step for step in terms of the races they’ve chosen to undertake. Gay will have the advantage of knowing that as the world champion his berth is guaranteed on the US team. But at the same time he’ll chose to compete in the upcoming trials.

But as Tyson Gay competes on the lucrative European track and field circuit. He knows that races such as this count for nothing in terms of real acclaim and notoriety. It’s the championships and world records that count.

And as we all know there was a time where the United States was the pre-eminent nation in men’s track and field. And that’s especiall true when it comes to the sprint events. The illustrious champions through the ages that we’ve come to know through the ages are names that’ve become synonymous with the art of great sprinting. Illustrious names such as Bob Hayes, Carl Lewis, Jim Hines , Harvey Glance , Jesse Owens and Maurice Greene. These have been the men that’ve rewritten the sports as far US male sprinting is concerned.

It’d be remiss to think that the US men can’t regain the stature that they once held with great esteem with regard to track and field. But it’s extremely hard to see where many of those world class track and field athletes will emanate from. As the men’s domninance continues to wane. We’ve seen a number of countries rise in prominence, seeking to lay claim to producing the top track athletes in the world.

If we’re to see the US men regain their stature as the top track and field competitors in the world. Then the upcoming world championships will either give us an indication as to how far they’ve fallen or whether or not they’ve risen to the heights that they once held. And it’ll be left to Tyson Gay to assure the world that the US is back.

Carl Lewis whose exploits at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles placed him amongst a select few men that've achieved the 'sprint double' of the 100m & 200m in the same Olympic games. Usain Bolt for his part will be out to prove to us all that what took place in Beijing was simply not a fluke at all. He’s become measured and more self assured . And that if anything is a always a great advantange to have over an opponent.

Nothing Ventured , Nothing Gained ..

Well Wimbledon has ended . And with a triumphant Serena Williams having won the women’s singles title in defeating her elder sibling Venus Williams 7-6(3), 6-2, in two rather compelling and riveting sets. It can be said that women’s tennis now finds itself in good standing. Unfortunately, the WTA rankings would suggest otherwise at this juncture with the idiotic notion that Dinara Safina still remains ranked #1 , with Serena now ranked #2.

It may well be that the WTA doesn’t always look at the results when coming to the assumption of the makeup of its rankings. Especially when it comes to the Grand Slam tournament events anyway. They however state that the rankings are indicative of the year’s commitment and form of the players. But then again the Grand Slam events are in-fact what essentially makes up the most productive part of the WTA’s calendar in terms of the interest shown by the attendance, tv audience and by the fans of the sport in general.

On the men’s side of the draw in the finals. We had the privilege of being part of one of the truly great finals of the modern era. There, we saw world #2 Roger Federer take on Andy Roddick in what truly was an epic event. What the fans encountered and witnessed bordered on being sublime as a well as riveting in terms of sheer raw emotion , passion and everything that these two brilliant players could muster up on a Sunday afternoon.

Those who were privileged enough to be in attendance witnessed a match that was thrilling and where both players gave it their all. Wherein at the end of it all absolutely nothing was left to give of themselves physically. A match that lasted in excess of five hours and a total of 78 games . And wherein the fifth set alone was the fifth longest of the modern era, encompassing thirty games in the deciding set which took 90 minutes to complete.

The realization ofa triumph as Federer acknowledges his feat and accepts the acclaim and applause forthcoming from the crowd. His five set thrilling victory over Andy Roddick sets a number of Wimbledon singles' finals records. This epic produced by Federer and Roddick will go down in the annals of tennis history. And the result speaks for itself as to how thrilling this men’s singles finals was in its being. The match ebbed and flowed like the currents of of a stream. And at the end of it all both men slumped to the ground after their physical excesses. The undeniable fact was that the better man prevailed on the day. But it’d be remis to think that the 5-7, 7-6(8-6),7-6 (7-5),3-6, 16-14 , result won by Federer wasn’t duly also also contributed by the valiant efforts of Andy Roddick. He was noble in defeat and if anything it may well have garnered him a new circle of fans.

Certainly there were no villains to be found in this thrilling masterpiece. If anything it was about two heroic figures who had a great deal of respect for each other. And that reverence was shown in the way that they allowed their appreciation to manfest itself for each other at the end of the match. The speeches were congratulatry and reciprocated as to the efforts put forth by each.

Now with but one remaining Grand Slam championship to be played as part of the Grand Slam calendar year. The US Open from Flushing, New York , takes on a life of its own . And it will have a great deal to live up to in terms of sheer excitement and drama provided. If we are provided with only half the excitement exhibited by both the men’s and women’s singles finals at Wimbledon. Then we’ll most certainly be in for a terrific treat !

A Finale Worth Watching

Well the matchups have been set . And the finalists in the men’s and women’s singles finals have been revealed. In the men’s singles finals it’ll be number one seed and world # 2 Roger Federer facing off against American, Andy Roddick.

On the women’s side it’ll be the Williams sisters Venus and Serena facing off against each other in another Grand Slam tennis final. And it will be a women’s final that will have the tennis world eagerly affixed to their every move. Venus Williams will be seeking to win her sixth women’s singles finals championship at Wimbledon and her third straight title. Having last won the title in ‘07 and ‘08. Should she prevail then she’ll become the first woman to do so since Steffi Graf achieved the feat in 1991 then in ‘92 and ‘93. Whereas Serena Williams will be seeking her third Wimbledone singles title. This will be the fourth time that the sisters have met in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon.

Roddick won the match in a thrilling and exhilerating four set victory 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(9-7), 7-6(7-5). Roddick now meets Federer in the men's singles final on Sunday afternoon at Wimbledon. It will the third meeting of the duo in a men's singles final at Wimbledon. In each of their previous meeting Federer prevailed. And whilst Venus may well be viewed as the prohibitive favorite to win the tournament. Serena will surely go out and try to derail her big sister’s ambitions of winning her sixth title. The two have also have also made it to the women’s doubles finals. There they’ll meet the Australian pairing of Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs. And in all likelihood it’ll be plain sailing for the sisters against the Antipodean pairing. When their doubles’ game takes shape they’re virtually unstoppable. And it would be viewed as a major surprise should the pairing of Stosur and Stubbs prevail.

Experience counts for everything they say. And in this case with the pairing of the two sisters in this final. We ought to see a thoroughly entertaining and physically demanding match. However that’ll be predicated upon the mindset of both sisters. Venus combines a game of power in terms of her serving and a great deal of finesse when it come to her groundstrokes. Serena on the other hand is no stranger to either. But her game is built around her physical attributes. And that comes from her amazing speed around the court. And in the backcourt she tends to prevail with her powerful forehand strokes. Enough cannot be said as to the game of both players. But this is one thing that you can be sure of. In no way will this be a boring or mundane women’s singles final. Whenever the two tend to meet in a Grand Slam final , it has to be said they’ve never failed to disappoint the fans in attendance or those watching on television.

And as an avowed fan of the game. I for one am very much looking forward to this women’s singles final. It ought to to provide us with some thoroughly thrilling entertainment one way or another. As to predicting a winner. Prognostication has never been a forte’ for me. I’m a fan first and foremost. And that for me is what sports is essentially about if I’m not a participant in a particular recreational endeavor.

On the men’s side we’ll be seeing history made by Roger Federer. He’ll be making his twentieth appearance in a Grand Slam singles final. A record he shares with Ivan Lendl. At it will be his sixteenth consecutive appearance in a Slam singles final. For Roddick this can’t be something that he’ll relishing. And that’s despite a wonderful display of tennis in defeating Andy Murray in a thorougly riveting four set match 6-4,4-6,7-6(9-7),7-6(7-5). Thereby denying the young Scottish player a chance of becoming the first British player to make an appearance in the men’s singles final since the late Fred Perry won the last of his three straight singles titles in the late thirties.

Whilst no one might covet the task now said to be facing Roddick. If he’s able to produce a semblance of the form used in defeating Murray. Then he may well be in with a chance. Even slight as it might be on appearance. Roddick knows that in his two previous meetings against Federer. It has been the Swiss player that has proven to be victorious.

And for Federer while his name has already been etched in tennis folklore and immortality. He can now rewrite the record books and dispel any thought as to who is the best player of his generation. Or for that fact the best player male player ever to play the game professionally. These are now the analogies that are and can be used to descibe Federer’s complete mastery of the game. And that’s with due respect to world number one Rafael Nadal. For Nadal who has proven to be Federer’s nemesis as of late. His none appearance here at Wimbledon and being unable to defend his title due to a recurring knee injury has left us somewhat wondering what might have been.

But the game isn’t played on the premis of supposition. It’s all about the intangibles being displayed at the time and the events as they unfold. If nothing else we can watch and appreciate what in effect will be history as it manifests itself in front of us all. This will be the culmination of a finale well worth watching and then some ! And no matter who proves to be victorious we can be enamored with it all.

Well That Was The Weekend That Was

The death of Michael Jackson notwithstanding . It’d appear the sport’s world carried on in its usual customary way. Jackson’s death became headline news around the world . As is befitting that of a once powerful entertainment icon.

Myself on the other hand, I wasn’t overly concerned with his death. Because despite his many manifestations and the fact that the so called long awaited CD never amounted to much. His death if anything is a god-send to us all. Unfortunately however , we’ll now have to deal with the endless speculation as to the cause of his death. And until the coroner’s office carries out the autopsy , we’ll never really know the true cause of death.

As Wimbledon proceeds into its second week. We’ve seen the rise of another American female teen sensation in the guise of seventeen year old Melanie Oudin, who defeated the sixth seed and former world #1 Jelana Jankovic 6-7(8-10),7-5,6-2, to make her way into the fourth round at Wimbledon in the women’s singles tournament. For Oudin this is her moment in the sportlight on the sport’s greatest stage. And anything garnered now from hereonin can only be considered a bonus for the young teen.

And as usual the expected names one’s accustomed to seeing have made it into the second week at Wimbledon. There’ve been one or two surprises and small upsets. But nothing as such that would indeed send a seismic shift across the sport.

Now if anything is we’re liable to see the men separated from the boys. And the girls separated from the women. As those who can legitimately lay claim to the title will now begin to make their presence felt over the ensuing rounds.

And the fans of NASCAR saw history being made when Joey Logano all of nineteen years of age became the sport’s youngest driver to win a Sprint Cup event. Logano won the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 in a rain shortened race at Loudon, New Hampshire.

Though the race wasn’t without its moments . It can be said that with the inclement weather did put somewhat of a damper on a race that many may well have been looking forward to.

For Dale Earnhardt Jr this proved to be something of a respite albeit that he finished outside the top ten with a thirteenth place finish. As to his postseason ambitions of making it to the Chase. His chances seem to be diminishing by the race . And for team boss Rick Hendrick whilst he’s still got implicit faith in Dale Jr, one has to question how much longer that this can really go on. As clearly with each passing moment you can clearly see that a great mistake was made in the letting go of Kyle Busch from the team to incorporate Earnardt within Hendrick Motorsports’ midst. Albeit that Earnhardt Jr may well be deemed of greater value in terms of the corporate brand imaging , popularity and the money that no doubt follows him in endorsements. But the facts are there for all to see ….nothing beats winning. And that’s something that Busch has become accustomed to doing since his departure from Hendricks Motorsports. His successor on the other hand has yet to win a Sprint Cup race for his team.

In baseball the AL East is very much the division we’d all believed it would be . The New York Yankees (43-32) are finding ways to win . Even though they’re having to play catchup with the Boston Red Sox (46-29) who lead their fierce and determined rivals by a mere three games. And slowly making up ground are last season’s winners of the AL pennant and the division the Tampa Bay Rays(42-35).

Such is the rivalry now being created between the trio that the drama as it unfolds warrants close scrutiny by the most knowledgeable of all fans. For if anything we’re liable to see the winner of the division become the prohibitive favorite to win the World Series outright.

Of the three teams at present it may well be the Rays and the Red Sox who are playing the best at present. And rthat’d be based on the record of their last ten games respectively. With the Rays going (7-3) to a decidedly more (6-4) by the Red Sox. The Yankees have matched the Rays in that respect but when measured against who’ve they’ve been playing as of late in the moribund Subway Series against a woefully inept New York Mets’ team. You can understand my reasoning for not being too overly impressed with those particular results.

The Yankees have swept their crosstown neighbors in the season series and along the way their legendary closer Mariano Rivera was able to notch up his 500th regular season save in Major League Baseall. Quite an achievement for a player who’s well respected by his peers as well the fans across the game of baseball.

And whilst much of this is going on within the game. Nothing much has really changed by way of the way with which the game’s hierarchy still creates the facade that it’s on the right path as far as its steroid abuse program is concerned. While Manny Ramirez sits out his apparent 50 game suspension he’s still able to participate in games . Albeit that it’s at the minor league level. And as asinine as it appears there’s nothing at all the league can do about it. But then again these are the rules that we’re led to believe that the game has to abide by ? So when is a suspension not a suspension within the realms of Major League Baseball ? That’s something I for one feel that inquiring minds would really like to know.

Alas, the heartfelt story and dream that has yet to be fulfilled came to an abrupt end. The US men’s soccer team failed when they were asked to try and achieve the impossible. Having pulled off the upset victory over Spain the semi-finals of FIFA’s Confed Cup. The fell to the might of Brazil in a spirited display by the US team.

The victory might’ve been never been doubt had they been able to hang on to the 2-0 lead they built up in the first half of the game. With millions watching at home and tens of thousands watching in the stands showing support for both teams. It has to be said that we may well have been seeing the beginnings of something new in terms of real support for the men’s national squad. Finally they’re gaining some recognition from the fans and not being merely thought of as an afterthought or side show.

Were the US men’s team triumphant over their South American counterparts instead of succumbing to a heartfelt 3-2 loss . Then there might be still some room for thought . And the chance that this team is capable and on the right track of pursuing a legitimate thought that they could be considered a contender for next year’s World Cup.

The game’s showcase event will make a return to South Africa where the World Cup will be staged. However, the team ought to be commended for the spirited fight that they put up against Brazil at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg in front of a sold out crowd.

As to what can be contemplated here at home. Well one can only hope that the support that was forthcoming and shown for the team can be maintained. If only to give the team the full support needed as they pursue their quest of garnering a berth for next year’s World Cup to be held in South Africa. And in order to do that the team will have to become more resolute , poised but above all maintain a level of consistency that has been lacking in their game . And which has led to their demise more often that we care to acknowledge. If anything that has been the thing that has really let the US men’s national team down over the years.

So this was the weekend that was. Well it was most definitely as such as far as the sporting highlights were concerned. Was there anything that you felt as such was worthy of acknowledging as far as the sporting weekend was concerned ?

Strawberries And Cream, All The Pomp, Ceremony, And Circumstance That Is Wimbledon

 This is the time of year that I so long for.  And being a Brit who’s now living in the US.  I just miss the days wherein I’d make it my rite of passage each year to attend one of the major sporting events that’d be taking place during the height of Summer.

In soccer it would be the FA Cup. Basically it’s English soccer’s answer to the Superbowl. In horse racing it would either be The Derby from Epsom racecourse or attending Goodwood racecourse “ “Glorious Goodwood” for the pageantry and the exciting thoroughbred racing that’d take place there over the course of several days.

Federer seeks to surpass the 14 Grand Slams singles titles' record that he now shares jointly with Pete Sampras. At heart I’m an avid sport’s fan and within reason just about any sport that elicits excitement and athletic endeavor . And you’re liable to get me hooked on it as either as a passive observer or an avowed fan. Within reason they’re also several sports that I’ve no real time for. But to relate those to you would take up far too much time. And as they say …..” time is of the essence “. Suffice to say boxing and the martial arts are also two of the great loves of my life ! But it is Wimbledon that seems to elicit all of the emotions within me. And the mere fact as a sporting event it’s where I have some of my fondest memories. Over the years I’d attended six Wimbledon events prior to my departure for the United States.

Which brings me on to Wimbledon and the All England Tennis Championships. The formal name given to the most prestigious event in the sport. And despite the formalities of the sport at heart it is very much the fact that although the All England Tennis Club’s President is presided over by a member of the Royal Family, HRH Prince Edward The Duke of Kent. It’s merely a ceremonial title and although the Prince is a passionate follower of the sport. He likes to be treated as an ordinary fan or member of the public would like to be viewed when it comes to tennis. Don’t let that dissuade you from the fact that the ambiance and emotional highs that one can get from watching the sport.

At the heart of Wimbledon is the empathy and passion that players and fans reciprocate between one an another. I doubt that there’s any sporting event in the world that elicits that sort of unbridled passion between the fan and the players. The intimacy of being that close to the action as it takes place is what in large part plays into it all. And as a venue the All England Lawn , Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) exhibits that.
